Red, White and Blue Beers for Independence Day
Independence Day is coming up (that’s the 4th of July for some of you). I decided to share a quick Red, White and Blue beer primer for those of you that want to drink some awesome beers for the holiday. No foreign suggestions today. I’m proud to be an American.
Let’s start with a fantastic Red. I’m talking about Lagunitas Imperial Red Ale, which is a new seasonal for the brewery. They regularly turn out great beers, but this one was special and deserves consideration for a year round. I’m making that case here. This beer has a wonderful aroma, spicy and piney yet balanced by sweet fruits. And the flavors, wow! Great bitterness and spicy, peppery jabs meet tropical lusciousness. Very juicy. If you can find it, buy it. If you can’t, bug the hell out of your retailer until you see it again. And pick up Squatters Radio From Hell Red Ale instead.
Next up, Calabaza Blanca, an awesome White Ale from Jolly Pumpkin. “But why did you pick a white beer with a Spanish name for this holiday?” Great question. That’s how we roll sometimes down here in Miami! Anyway, these guys are from Michigan, pretty much as American as you can get. The tart citrus flavors meet a flavorful dose of wheat and spices to make for a killer refreshing beer. I highly suggest you try this one!
Blue. Hmmm. I’ve been dying to try Ithaca Brewing’s LeBleu Sour Blueberry Ale for a long time. Since that hasn’t happened, that’s a hint and just me dreaming all in one sentence. I couldn’t just pick some run-of-the-mill blueberry beer to represent our colors, could I? Nope! I decided on Dogfish Head Black & Blue, a spectacular version. Fruity and juicy blueberries and raspberries, tart and sweet simultaneously, meet a boozy warming feeling that you will not be able to resist. Just fantastic!
So there’s your Red, White and Blue. If you don’t get it, well, you probably aren’t celebrating the American Independence Day.
